Food Programs

Karsh Center at Wilshire Boulevard Temple

The Karsh Center provides dental care, vision care, mental health services, pro bono legal services, grief support, healthy and nutritious groceries, clothing, vouchers, baby supplies, and other resources to folks in need in the community. Diapers and bags of food are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays via appointment only.

The Karsh Center’s most urgent need is increased financial support, so that they can respond to a significant surge in demand, including but not limited to food, diapers, and hygiene kits. DONATE HERE.

The Karsh Center is accepting applications for volunteers for: on-site volunteering in isolation, on-site volunteering in client services, driving pick-ups and deliveries (of food and essential items), outreach and communication, data entry and translation of materials into other languages. On-site volunteer activities will take place with a limited number of volunteers in one space, per the most recent CDC recommendations sign up to volunteer HERE.

Wilshire Presbyterian Church

Wilshire Presbyterian Church’s Food Pantry is located in their Community Center provides free groceries to those in need through a partnership with HOPENET. Call (213) 387 5387 for more information.

Volunteers are welcome to help assemble grocery bags on Sunday afternoons from 12.30pm - 2pm or on Mondays to distribute the food from 8am - 1pm. Call (213) 387-5387 for more information.

Civic Engagement

Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council

One of ninety-nine Neighborhood Councils which serve as liaisons between our community and the City. GWNC is a volunteer elected Board with representatives from every Greater Wilshire Area. The council has Standing Committees, comprised of Board members and other community stakeholders, do much of the work of the GWNC, meeting regularly and making official recommendations to the Board.

Getting involved is as simple as attending council meetings.  Meetings are a great way to learn about the issues in the community, hear from local agencies and elected officials, and meet board members. Mid City West Community Council 

If you live, work, own property or participate in any significant way in the Mid City West area, you are automatically a stakeholder member. 

The Mission of the Mid City West Community Council is to:

  • foster a sense of community and establish a forum for all stakeholders to express their ideas and opinions about their neighborhood

  • promote stakeholder participation in City government and decision making so that it is more responsive to our local needs and requests, and

  • create opportunities to build partnerships with government in advocating and affecting solutions

Seniors

SAINT BARNABAS SENIOR SERVICES

For over 100 years, St. Barnabas Senior Services has been serving economically vulnerable older adults in Los Angeles County. During COVID-19, it is offering meal delivery for seniors 60 and older, as well as case management and family caregiver support services via zoom and telephone. Check their social media for activities for seniors online.

Sponsor a bag – For a donation of just $20, you can provide SSC’s homeless clients with a Connect Kit filled with essential items they so desperately need including a warm shower. Nothing restores a sense of human dignity for someone living on the streets like a shower. Donate the items – The bags are filled with items our homeless clients request every day and can easily be purchased at places like Target or through our Amazon wish list.
